How To Take On Your First Employee

Starting a business can be an exciting and life-changing process to go through, with many people choosing to take this route in the modern world.

You will have the chance to create a working environment which works for you, can tailor the work you do to perfectly meet your desires, and will benefit from building something from the ground up.

Of course, though, as a big part of this, there will almost certainly come a time when you can’t handle all of this work by yourself anymore. You will need to take on an employee, but how exactly should you handle this for the first time?

The first stage in this process will involve posting adverts for the job you have available. You don’t need to pay anyone to do this for you, with loads of recruitment sites offering free ads to companies which are hiring for the first time.

Alongside this, you can use your personal and professional profiles on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and even Instagram to get the word out about the job you’ve got on offer.

A lot of people limit themselves to a single platform when they approach this, though this isn’t necessary, and you’re more sure to find success if you open the doors to different types of recruitment.

Candidates & Interviews

It won’t take long until you’re receiving loads of applications for your job. You will need to go through each of these carefully, shortlisting those who you’d like to meet for interviews.

It’s always worth doing interviews as soon as possible, as a lot of people will apply for more than one job at a time, and this will mean that your options could disappear if you take too much time.

You should ask the same questions in each interview, keeping a record of people’s answers to check back later. Only you can make the decision to hire someone, and you will have to use your intuition to find someone ideal for the role.

Onboarding

Hiring someone to work for you isn’t as simple as shaking hands and forming an agreement. You need to have contracts, will have to figure out taxation, and there will be a lot of different documents and rules which have to be followed.

Employee benefits and payroll services can take all of this work out of your hands. While this will cost a little bit, it will be well worth it to ensure that your employees are hired properly.

It can be easy to break the law when you’re doing things like this for the first time, but you will still face the same punishment as a large company making similar mistakes.

Taking on an employee for the first time will always be an exciting step in your business journey.

This will signal that your company is growing, while also showing that you have the ability to make large purchases. Of course, though, a big part of this will involve making sure that you’re ready for your employee in the first place.

Deep breath… are you ready for this?  Ready to take on your first employee?
