How to Make Your New Business Thrive

Many people go into their new business with one objective: survive, which is to say, make sure it’s not a complete failure. However, that really should only be the beginning of your ambitions.

You don’t want to just make up the numbers, you’re here to make things happen.

In other words: it’s not about surviving, it’s about thriving.

But of course, it’s one thing to say that, another thing to do it.  Below, we take a look at a few useful tips that’ll put you in a prime position to succeed.

Positive Attitude

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are right”.  Henry Ford made these words famous and it’s a good point — if you think something is impossible, then you’re not going to have the fortitude to work through the tough moments.

The good times might be just around the corner, yet you’ve already stopped walking because you didn’t think it was possible. So don’t underestimate just how far a positive mindset can take you.

It’s a bit cliche, but it’s a cliche for a reason: it is true.

Work with what You Have

Survived the first couple of years in business? Now it's time to THRIVE. #HowtoMakeYourBusinessThriveIt’s easy to look at the resources, staff, and finances that other companies have behind them and feel a tinge of jealousy.

But looking at the situation of other businesses — or focusing too much on what you don’t have — won’t get you anywhere, or at least it won’t get you anywhere good. It’s just not helpful.

While you should do your best to ensure you have as much funding and support as possible, once you’ve exhausted all options, then that’ll be it for the time being.

At that point, all you can do is roll up your sleeves and make the most of what you have. There are multiple solutions for every problem, don’t forget that.

Dedicated Time

Everybody wants success. Indeed, ask someone if they want to be successful, and how often do you think you’ll hear ‘no’ in reply? Never. The better question to ask is, ‘how badly do you want success?’ Because that’s really what it comes down to.

If you’re working two hours a week trying to build your company, then the odds are against you. However, if you dedicate time each day, and have a concrete plan of all the tasks you need to do, then you’ll be greatly increasing your chances.

There really is no substitute for hard work when it comes to making your dreams come true — it’s usually a bigger indicator than opportunity and resources.

Networking with Others

Your business doesn’t exist all on its own; it’s part of the broader world and all the other people and companies that also exist.

You’ll only be holding yourself back if you adopt a competitive, combative attitude with everyone else — humans have always benefited much more from cooperation and even though that idea isn’t always promoted as much as it should be, it’s something that you should keep in mind.

Small businesses, in particular, can help themselves greatly by working with similarly sized ventures. You never know what collaborative opportunities might come up if you simply open your mouth and talk to others.

Plus, as an added bonus, you’ll also be marketing your company.

Bringing People on Board

Some people work their best when they’re shut away in a room, far away from other people. But this isn’t the case for most people — we are social creatures, after all, and there are times when our energy and ideas build when we’re working with others.

If you know that you’re one of these people, then look at bringing other people on board, even if it’s just on a part-time basis. You’ll feel like you’re making strides forward — and positively influencing others — by bringing someone else into the fold.

Plus, there are a lot of admin duties when it comes to running a business, and this way, you’ll be able to lighten the load somewhat.

Outsourcing Tasks

You don’t have the stature or resources of larger companies, and that can be an issue, especially since you can’t hire a person to do every advanced task that your business needs completing. But there is another way: outsourcing.

By hiring outside companies to do those complicated (or repetitive) tasks for you, you’ll be freeing up your time and levelling the playing field between large and small companies.

Looking at working with companies that offer managed services for your IT needs, an accountant to handle the money issues, and a reputable marketing firm. With those three services on board, you’ll be in a strong position to thrive!

Know Your Audience

One of the common mistakes that small business owners make is trying to grab too much of the market. They can’t thrive as a company, because they’re trying to take on too much: there’s too much ground to cover.

Instead, focus your energy in the right place, which is to say, the people who are likely to be interested in your business.

During your market research, you’ll want to identify your target audience, and then tailor your advertising, branding, and products in line with what they’re looking for. It’s a way to smartly push your company in the right direction.

Looking After Yourself

Finally, remember that you won’t be able to do what’s best for your business if you’re not first doing what’s right for yourself. Self-care is always important, and especially so if you’re trying to run a business when high stress levels and long hours are common.

To make sure you’re at your best, look at your overall wellness. Are you sleeping well? Are you eating healthy meals, and getting enough exercise? Yoga and meditation are two activities that many entrepreneurs swear by because they reduce stress levels so well.

You may start your business with just an idea, but if you do all the right things, then you might just find that the sky’s the limit. Aim big, do well, and good things will come.

    Hi Lauren
I really loved how you ended your post about self care! A lot of the times we forget about ourselves and get buried into our work trying to make ends meet or make deadlines etc.. we forget about taking care of ourselves! Thanks for reminding me of this.

Hi Felicia, you’re so right. I neglected self-care for the first 4 years of my son’s life. It’s such an easy trap to fall into, being too busy to look after yourself, yet it could be the difference between success or failure, breakthrough or burnout. It’s felt so good to give back to myself, take the time for coaching, for exercise and for healthy nutrition. All the best to you as you start prioritising yourself again as well.
